From northern Italy a full truck usually reaches Brno in 1–2 days: it is about 750 km from the Veneto and roughly 1,000 km from Milan. Via Tarvisio or via the Brenner?

Road freight from Italy to Brno and Moravia

For Moravia, the eastern route works better from most of Italy. From the north-east, trucks cross at Tarvisio into Villach, continue through Carinthia and Styria to Vienna and then head via Mikulov to Brno. The Brenner route through Innsbruck, Salzburg and Linz makes sense mainly from Lombardy, Piedmont and Trentino, or when the truck is also loading or unloading in Bavaria or Austria.

  • Tarvisio – Villach – Vienna: shortest for the Veneto, Friuli and Emilia-Romagna, leading straight into South Moravia.
  • Brenner – Innsbruck – Linz – Vienna: for the west of northern Italy; the Tyrol has truck restrictions and lorry metering near Kufstein, which we build into the plan.

What is most often shipped from Italy to Moravia?

Machinery and engineering components from Lombardy and Emilia-Romagna for Moravian manufacturers, semi-finished metal products, ceramic tiles from the Sassuolo area, furniture and interior fittings from the Veneto, plastics, textiles, food and wine. Italian suppliers issue a DDT delivery note (documento di trasporto) with each consignment; the driver hands it over at delivery together with the CMR consignment note.

What to watch out for in Italy

  1. Driving bans – trucks over 7.5 t do not run in Italy on Sundays and public holidays, and in summer on some Saturdays as well. Goods ready on Friday morning usually still leave before the weekend.
  2. August – around 15 August (Ferragosto) many Italian companies close for up to two weeks. Agree August collections with your supplier well in advance.
  3. Closing times – Italian sites often release goods only until a set hour; late in the afternoon the truck may no longer be loaded.

How do Italian goods reach eastern Moravia and Slovakia?

Italy → Brno via Tarvisio and Vienna
Italy → Brno via Tarvisio and Vienna

The Vienna route has a further advantage for Moravia: from Vienna, trucks can fan out in several directions without doubling back. For Brno and on along the D1 to Olomouc and Ostrava they cross at Mikulov; for Zlín and Uherské Hradiště they go either via Brno or via Břeclav and Hodonín; and for Bratislava, Trnava or Nitra they head straight east from Vienna. This lets us combine deliveries in Brno, eastern Moravia and western Slovakia on one truck from Italy.

How much we carry

From 1 to 6 pallets by groupage, 7–18 pallets as a part load and from about 18 pallets or 7 t a full 13.6 m truck. The short route via Vienna means Italian pallets can also be added to trucks already heading for Moravia with other freight. The price calculator gives an indicative figure and how to book an import explains the process. Goods from Austria are easy to pick up on the way – see freight from Austria to Brno.
